New Standards for Vehicle Cybersecurity Defense, Rating Frameworks and Experiential Learning in Vehicle Cyber Engineering
In a few months I will be in Long Beach, Calif., to speak on “Empowering Fleet Security: New Standards for Vehicle Cybersecurity Defense, Rating Frameworks and Experiential Learning in Vehicle Cyber Engineering” at the annual National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) Cybersecurity Conference. It’s always an honor to take part in the conversations shaping how transportation leaders respond to today’s most pressing cyber threats.

Truck fleet managers and IT professionals face growing threats from cyberattacks targeting vehicle electronics and software. The Vehicle Cyber Engineering (VCE) program at the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM), where I teach, is at the forefront of research and education in vehicle cybersecurity. Join me at the NMFTA Cybersecurity Conference to discover how hands-on testbeds—developed by the VCE Laboratory—can help teams understand and defend against real-world hacking techniques, malware and system vulnerabilities. I’ll teach practical strategies for protecting fleets, along with actionable insights and tools to strengthen vehicles’ defenses against cyber threats.
For this session, I will bridge the latest SAE J1939-91A and J1939-91C cybersecurity standards with real-world solutions for fleet managers. I’ll discuss how Cyber Security Rating Frameworks (CSRFs) can provide clear, standardized ways to assess and improve fleets’ cyber defenses. Then I’ll give hands-on demonstrations with portable testbed systems from the UDM VCE Lab. Participants will gain practical experience in identifying vulnerabilities, responding to cyber threats and implementing effective protection strategies. This is for teams wanting actionable tools and insights to safeguard vehicle electronics and software against today’s evolving cyber risks.
