SAE J1979-2 and SAE J1979-3 Overview and Secure Diagnostics

Mark Zachos films SuperCharged: On the Road at SEMA Garage for his regular SAE Detroit Section feature on YouTube.
Join Mark Zachos on May 21 at SEMA Garage Detroit for a hands-on workshop on advanced vehicle protocols and cybersecurity. The training will focus on how automotive standards SAE J1979-2 and SAE J1979-3 will impact cars coming out this year.
With modern vehicles rapidly becoming software-defined, access to diagnostics is also changing. By the start of model year 2027, all new vehicles in the U.S. market will be required to implement new SAE J1979 automotive standards. SAE J1979-2 (OBDonUDS) will become mandatory for all internal combustion vehicles. SAE J1979-3 (ZEVonUDS), with some exceptions, will be required for zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs).
An SAE Fellow, Mark Zachos is also president of DG Technologies in Farmington Hills, Mich., and the director of University of Detroit Mercy’s Vehicle Cyber Engineering Lab. This workshop includes real-world examples and interactive exercises designed to teach practical implementation, cybersecurity implications, OTA updates, DoIP and access control features for modern vehicle networks.
Key Highlights Include:
- Background of the SAE J1979 classic standard, emissions compliance and global diagnostics
- Key distinctions and use cases for J1979-2 (updated OBDonUDS) and J1979-3 OBD diagnostic test modes for ZEVs (ZEVonUDS)
- Defined information on Over the Air (OTA) updates, DoiP and secure gateway modules
- Cybersecurity implications of diagnostic data access in modern vehicle networks
